What is a CFP® or Certified Financial Planner™?

Financial advisors use many titles so it's difficult to distinguish what certifications an advisor has and exactly what those designations mean.  Advisors who are Certified Financial Planner professionals have completed extensive training and are held to the highest educational and ethical standards.

Only financial professionals who have fulfilled the CFP Board requirements can use the CFP® certification.  This designation requires a financial advisor to be professional, competent and ethical by completing and maintaining the strict guideline in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Examinations
  • Annual Re-Certification
  • Experience Level
  • Ethics and Background Check

Melanie Colusci achieved her CFP® designation in 2003.

What is a AEP® or Accredited Estate Planner?

Financial advisors who are Accredited Estate Planner® professionals have completed extensive training and are held to the highest educational and ethical standards by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC).  This council only awards designations to estate planning professionals who meet special requirements of education, experience, knowledge, professional reputation, and character.  This accreditation also requires ongoing education and annual recertification that reflects specialization within estate planning.

Melanie Colusci achieved her AEP® designation in 2016.

What is Estate Planning and Do I Actually Need It?

Estate planning is an important component of your overall financial plan. It means creating a strategy to maintain financial security throughout your lifetime AND ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes at your death. A key piece of estate planning is understanding and minimizing the impact of taxes.

Often people think estate planning is only for the very wealthy but many circumstances like owning a business makes proper estate planning a critical piece of your overall financial plan.

Learn more about the AEP® designation by visiting National Association of Estate Planners & Councils website.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, CFP® (with plaque design) and CFP® (with flame design) in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board's initial and ongoing certification requirements.
